Miami Standard (Barton County, KS) – A babysitter checked under a bed to calm a frightened child about the possibility of a monster lurking there — only to encounter a man who had no business being there, according to a statement from a Sheriff’s Office in Kansas.
A 27-year-old individual was taken into custody this week following an altercation with the babysitter that resulted in the child being knocked to the ground.
Deputies from the Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded late Monday to a residence close to Great Bend, a city with a population of approximately 15,000 located in the western region of the state. Upon their arrival, the suspect had already fled, but the babysitter informed them that the child had been expressing concerns about a “monster” prior to her discovery of the suspect.
A man previously resided at the location, but a protection from abuse order has been issued against him, requiring him to remain away from the property, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities conducted a search but could not locate the individual until the following day, when he was apprehended following a foot pursuit, according to the report.
Recent online court records indicate that the individual had secured his release on bond approximately 10 days prior, following charges related to criminal threat, domestic battery, and breaching a protection from abuse order. The claims are said to have taken place in January and February.
In light of his recent arrest, a judge has mandated that he be held in custody without the possibility of bail. The sheriff’s office has reported that further charges being sought include aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, and child endangerment.
