K9 Scout Takes Down Burglary Suspect Who Thought He Could Hide in a Tree in Dixie County

Dixie County, FL – A Florida burglary suspect attempting to evade authorities was no match for a determined police dog, who sniffed out the fugitive high up in a tree.

According to the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office, K9 Scout, a decorated police dog, tracked down Gregory Yates Jr. after he allegedly tried to break into a homeowner’s shed. When law enforcement was called, Yates fled into the woods in an attempt to escape.

“The trail led across NE 640 Street and eventually North, where Scout stopped beneath a tree, looked up, and found Yates trying to blend in with the branches,” the Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

“Unfortunately for Mr. Yates, Scout doesn’t fall for camouflage. With the kind of enthusiasm only a four-legged deputy can muster, Scout encouraged the suspect down from his perch.”

Despite his efforts to remain hidden, Yates was quickly spotted by Scout, who signaled his handlers. Officers on the scene encouraged Yates to come down, assisted by the enthusiastic presence of the four-legged deputy.

Yates was taken into custody along with his alleged accomplice, Nicole Hillesland, who was found lingering near the crime scene when authorities arrived. Both suspects were booked into the Dixie County Jail in Cross City and charged with burglary of a structure and possession of burglary tools.
