Miami Standard (Chicago, IL) – A Chicago man was detained last Friday after reportedly leading police on a high-speed chase in DuPage County before attempting to flee on foot.
According to DuPage County prosecutors, a court ruled that Kevin Culps, 28, should remain in jail after being charged with aggravated fleeing and evading, as well as other misdemeanor and petty traffic charges, including driving with a suspended license.
Culps reportedly fled from cops after being pulled over for a suspended registration in Downers Grove at 2:18 a.m. last Friday, according to prosecutors.
He made his way to Interstate 88, where Oak Brook police officers began to pursue him. Culps allegedly hit speeds of around 113 mph at I-88 and Meyers Road.
When he entered eastbound I-290, Berkeley police officers placed spike strips on his vehicle. Culps then allegedly got out of his car and attempted to flee on foot, jumping down a 20-foot wall into the trees.
He was later apprehended following a brief foot chase.
Officers discovered a rifle near where Culps ran.
The local state attorney applauded the suspect’s arrest.
“It is alleged that in an utter display of contempt for the rule of law and complete disregard for public safety, Mr. Culps led police officers from multiple agencies on a 113-mph high-speed chase,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “The successful apprehension of the defendant in this case sends a loud and clear message that law enforcement throughout the region will work together to ensure safe travel for motorists on all our roadways.”
Culps’ next court appearance is set for April 14.
