Illegal Indoor Marijuana Growing Facility Busted in Maine After Someone Called Police About Smoke Coming From House
An unusual incident occurred in Maine last week when residents mistook a fire for a significant drug bust. According to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, emergency services were contacted by a concerned resident of Turner at 11:24 a.m. on Jan. 31.
The resident reported a potential structure fire and observed smoke coming from a home’s garage. Upon arrival, firefighters from the Turner Fire-Rescue Department quickly identified that the smoke was, in fact, steam emanating from a vast number of marijuana plants.
An elaborate operation was discovered in a residential home, complete with grow lights, chemical fertilizers, dehumidifiers, and propane heaters. Authorities reached out to the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, which confirmed that no license had been issued for the residence or its Massachusetts homeowner.
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that they have applied for and obtained a search warrant for the residence. “Authorities confiscated around 2,500 marijuana plants.”
Investigators are currently looking into the potential connection between the weed operation and other “illegal marijuana grows” discovered in Lincoln, Kennebec, and Somerset counties.
No individuals have been apprehended in relation to the extensive marijuana cultivation site. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
