Houston Parents in Custody after Infant Twins Died from Blunt-Force Trauma
Houston, TX: Houston parents have been arrested by the authorities after their newborn twins were found dead at their residence. The officers say the twins died after several incidents of blunt-force trauma.
The parents, Fernando Vega and Angelina Calderon, both 21, are facing charges of two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.
Vega contacted the Houston police at his residence on the southeast side of the city at approximately 11 a.m. on October 4, 2023. The reason for his call was the unfortunate discovery of the twins being unresponsive, as reported by the officers. Paramedics arrived at the residence and declared the twins deceased.
Calderon reportedly informed detectives that she had seen the babies for the last time just after midnight before going to bed. According to officers, Vega mentioned that he looked after the twins during the night and last saw them around 6 a.m.
According to Calderon, she woke up around 8 a.m. and Vega dropped her off at work around 10:30 a.m., while they were still sleeping.

According to documents, the babies were cared for by their grandmother during that time. Vega reportedly came back at approximately 11 a.m. and discovered that the twins were not responding. Without hesitation, Vega immediately dialed 911 for assistance.
At first, the police did not discover any significant traumatic injuries on the infants as per Law and Crime.
However, a frightening story emerged from the autopsy. An affidavit supporting probable cause states that doctors discovered the babies’ severe malnutrition and trauma on three consecutive occasions.
Detectives reported that Calderon admitted to them that she had never taken the babies to the doctor for checkups, even though they were delivered prematurely.
In addition to various rib fractures and contusions on the infant’s forehead, body, feet, and arms, the affidavit detailed fractures of the left femur. According to the autopsy, the second baby also suffered from bruises on the arm and forehead as well as the head, collarbone, and ribs.

The injuries were at different stages of healing, which led officials to believe that they occurred in three consecutive events.
The medical examiner determined on Thursday that both twins died from multiple blunt force injuries and that the cause of death was homicide. Detectives wrote that Vega and Calderon deliberately caused the injuries and ought to have sought medical attention.
Officers transported Vega and Calderon without bond to the Harris County Jail.
