Herkimer County Braces for Slippery Roads as Weather Advisory Takes Effect

Miami Standard (Herkimer County, NY) – The National Weather Service announced a winter weather advisory on Friday at 3:24 a.m., effective from 8 p.m. until 11 a.m. on Sunday for Herkimer County.

“Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations up to one inch and ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch,” describes the weather service. “Freezing rain will likely change to plain rain in most areas on Saturday as temperatures warm above freezing, then change back to freezing rain Saturday night as temperatures cool below freezing again.”

“Plan on slippery road conditions. Power outages possible,” comments the weather service. “Slow down and use caution while traveling. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.”

The chill of winter can make roads perilous, resulting in over 6,000 fatalities and upwards of 480,000 injuries due to weather-related incidents annually. When navigating snowy or icy roads, prioritising safety is essential. Take it easy and be careful.

As temperatures hover around the freezing mark, it’s wise to be cautious of potential icy spots on the road and modify your driving habits accordingly. Stay vigilant for ice buildup on power lines and tree branches, as they could snap and drop.

Whenever you can, steer clear of driving in these circumstances completely. However, if you need to go outside, opt for paths that have less vegetation and overhead wires, and always avoid touching any fallen power lines. If you come across such a situation, please call 911 right away.

Make sure your gas tank is topped off and prepare your vehicle with crucial winter gear, such as a windscreen scraper, jumper cables, a compact shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, additional warm clothing, drinking water, and high-energy non-perishable snacks.
