GoFundMe for Ohio Deputy’s Accused Killer Puts ‘Target on Police,’ Expert Warns

Police were given a “target” to shoot online in support of Rodney Hinton Jr., the Ohio father who is accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy the day after police killed his son during a pursuit for a stolen car, according to Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith (Ret.), a spokesperson for the National Police Association.

Cincinnati police say Hinton Jr. “intentionally” hit retired Hamilton County Deputy Larry Henderson with a car around 1 p.m. Friday while he was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during a graduation event. He is now charged with aggravated murder.

People were donating a lot of money to Hinton Jr.’s lawyer fees and his son’s funeral through GoFundMe pages. Support for both guys has also been loud and clear on social media.

The Hinton Jr. GoFundMe page said on Monday that it had raised about $5,000, but GoFundMe told Fox News Digital that the event “raised less than $600 total.”

Brantner Smith told Fox News Digital that everyone has the constitutional right to a lawyer in a criminal case. However, she said that people on social media seem to be spreading false information about the case, saying things like “Rodney Hinton Jr. was unarmed and murdered by police,” which is not at all true.

“No police officer wakes up in the morning and says, ‘I hope I get to shoot somebody tonight,'” she told me. “And this situation in Cincinnati is just another example of the false narrative that somehow it’s the American law enforcement officer who is violent.”

It was also said that posts on social media supporting Rodney Hinton’s actions “do nothing but put a target on the backs of law enforcement officers.”

Chief Teresa Theetge of the Cincinnati Police Department said that officers were chasing a car that had been stolen from an apartment complex when four people got out of the car and started running away from police.

Ryan Hinton, who was reportedly armed at the time, hid behind a skip as one officer chased him. The cop shot Ryan when he came out of the skip and killed the 18-year-old suspect, Theetge said.

According to Theetge, two other suspects in the stolen car case have been caught, but one is still on the run.

The “Justice for Rodney Hinton Jr. and his Son” GoFundMe page, which has since been deleted, earned more than $5,000. Its goal was to “help raise funds for Rodney Hinton Jr. lawyer [sic] for the justice of his sons murder” and “also to stop police brutality against innocent people and children.”

More than $25,000 has been raised on a different GoFundMe page called “Help Honour Ryan Hinton’s Memory and Seek Justice.” This page is still active and its goal is to help the 18-year-old’s family “seek justice for Ryan in the form of legal representation and a proper memorial for his life.”
