Georgia Budding Student Shot Dead by Armed Intruder at Kennesaw Campus leaving Family Devastated

Tragedy struck Kennesaw State University’s campus on Saturday, May 18, when a college student from Georgia lost their life in a shooting incident.

A tragic incident occurred at the Austin Residence complex on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the loss of a female student’s life. The university shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, May 19, providing details of the incident.

According to an email from KSU to PEOPLE on Monday, May 20, the victim has been identified as 21-year-old Alasia Franklin.

The school’s police department issued a secure in place alert to the community at 4 p.m. due to reports of an armed intruder on campus, according to a statement. A notification confirming the safety was sent approximately 45 minutes later.

A suspect named Samuel Harris has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, as stated in the report. The university clarified that he is not enrolled at Kennesaw State University, situated approximately 27 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Harris was arrested on Saturday and is currently being held without bond, according to Cobb County jail records. The records only state his date of birth as 2003. It is uncertain whether he has entered a plea, and his booking report does not provide any information about his attorney.

“During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family and friends,” expressed KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig in the statement.

According to Bobby Franklin, Alasia’s father, she was a dedicated student on her way to becoming a nurse practitioner.

According to senior Anthony Harrison, a friend of Alasia, he was awakened by the sound of gunshots and discovered her lying on the ground when he went outside. He immediately called 911 for help, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta.

According to the outlet, he expressed his sheer horror upon witnessing the scene as he walked out.

The university expressed its commitment to offering assistance and resources to individuals impacted by this unfortunate event.
