General Motors Recalls Over 449,000 SUVs and Pickups Due to Faulty Brake Warning Light
General Motors (GM) has announced the recall of 449,671 SUVs and pickups due to a malfunction in the brake fluid warning system, the company revealed on Friday. The faulty warning light may fail to alert drivers when brake fluid levels are low, potentially increasing the risk of accidents.
According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “In the event of a brake fluid leak, the vehicle’s brake pedal performance may degrade before the brake telltale timely illuminates … increasing the risk of a crash.” The issue stems from a “mismatch” between the electronic brake control module software and the system’s calibrations.
The recall affects the following GM models:
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2023 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban 1500
- 2023-2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
- 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
GM stated that it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the faulty warning light. However, the defect could result in vehicles being driven with low brake fluid, potentially reducing braking performance.
The automaker plans to correct the issue by providing free software updates to the affected vehicles. Owners will have the option to update the software remotely via over-the-air technology or visit a GM dealership for the fix.
Notification letters will be sent to vehicle owners starting October 28. Those with affected models can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006 for more details. The recall is listed under GM’s reference number N242447990.
For additional information, vehicle owners can also contact NHTSA’s safety hotline at (888) 327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov. The NHTSA recall number is 24V-674.
