Gang Members stabbed K-9 and Correction Officer in Prison Assault Brawl in Virginia

Sussex, VA: A K-9 was stabbed to death as it was trying to save its handler from the deadly stabbing going on in Virginia prisons.

The Virginia Department of Corrections reports that on Tuesday, three convicts at Sussex I State Prison who are members of the MS-13 gang brutally assaulted another inmate in a housing unit, with a fourth inmate acting as a supervisor.

Corrections Officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields and her K-9 partner, Rivan, were nearby when the attack occurred.

The dog “was violently and repeatedly stabbed and kicked by the inmates” during the subsequent altercation, according to VADOC. Despite efforts to save his life, he passed away in the facility.

The assaulted prisoner was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment before being transferred back to the institution.

Because of his faithful partner, Fields, a certified K-9 handler and four-year member of the Department, did not suffer any major injuries.

Authorities have identified three of the four inmates who committed the attack as members of the violent MS-13 gang; all four are from Guatemala and El Salvador.

Among the many charges against these individuals—all of whom were in the United States illegally when they were arrested—are first-degree murder, attempted rape, kidnapping/abduction, malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, child pornography, grand larceny, and drug possession.

The incident on Tuesday is likely to result in further accusations against them. The VADOC has stated that the inquiry is continuing.

The Belgian Malino dog Rivan would have been six years old on April 30. In July 2019, he became a certified veteran and joined the VADOC.

The dog’s mom was a Secret Service agent and his dad was a police dog for a Southwest Virginia department.
