Miami Standard (Rapid City, SD) – Former South Dakota TV news anchor Shad Olson, 52, is set to stand trial in June after being accused of assaulting his longtime girlfriend in a violent domestic incident.
According to court documents, Olson allegedly attacked the woman in her Rapid City home in February 2023, grabbing her by the throat and slamming her to the ground multiple times. The affidavit of probable cause states that he repeatedly called his girlfriend of eight years a “crazy b—h,” forcing her to flee barefoot as he chased her.
The victim told authorities that Olson flipped her over and threw her onto the floor up to five times. She stated that the carpeted surface likely prevented broken bones during the attack.
Pattern of Abuse and Political Stress
The woman also reported that Olson had a history of violence, often triggered by his drinking and reactions to political events.
“Shad is stressed over politics, and it makes him drink,” she allegedly told authorities.
The affidavit further states that Olson does not work and has no source of income, with the victim claiming she pays for everything while he obsesses over national affairs. She told investigators that she had endured this pattern of abuse for eight years and feared for her life during the attack.
Alleged Assault Details
During the incident, Olson reportedly chased the woman, warning her not to ruin his reputation. When she attempted to return home, he allegedly lifted her by the throat, telling her, “You made me do this,” while shaking her with her feet off the ground.
She managed to break free and seek refuge at a neighbor’s house before law enforcement arrived. Olson was later arrested and released on $5,000 bail, which was posted by Jodie Frye, a former legislative candidate.
Legal Proceedings and Trial
Initially charged with felony aggravated assault-domestic violence, Olson saw the charge dismissed by the Meade County State’s Attorney’s Office in November 2024. However, he still faces a Class 1 misdemeanor charge for simple assault-domestic violence.
Olson had initially agreed to a plea deal but later withdrew, choosing to face a jury trial. His trial is scheduled to begin on June 5.
