Florida Gov. DeSantis signs trio of measures aimed at curbing Illegal Immigration
Tallahassee, FL: Three measures to strengthen Florida’s fight against illegal immigration were signed into law on Friday by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“We’re here today, one, to build off a record of success with respect to combating illegal immigration…if you go back six or seven years in the state of Florida, we were not leading against illegal immigration at all, in fact, we were one of the weaker states,” DeSantis said.
According to DeSantis, since he assumed office, the state has outlawed sanctuary towns and increased penalties for fentanyl traffickers, who typically enter communities over the southern border.
Florida does not provide driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, and it also does not accept licenses from states that do not require social security numbers. Additionally, DeSantis mentioned that lawmakers have implemented E-Verify to verify the legal employment status of people working for businesses with a particular employee threshold.
“The federal government has failed in its responsibility to secure our southern border, leaving states to fend for themselves,” DeSantis said. “In Florida, we do not tolerate illegal immigration, let alone lawlessness committed by illegal aliens who shouldn’t be here in the first place. The bills I signed today further enhance Florida’s capabilities to uphold the law.”

The maximum term for a felony committed by an illegal alien with a prior deportation is increased to 30 years in prison, and DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1036, which does just that.
Local governments cannot accept “community” ID cards issued to undocumented immigrants under House Bill 1451. At this time, issuing these kinds of IDs by municipal governments is illegal in Florida.
People who drive without a license will face harsher punishments according to HB 1589. If they commit two or more violations, the maximum term is raised from sixty days to one year in prison.
According to Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, the leadership of Florida will not sit idly by as illegal immigration continues to spiral out of hand.
“Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has provided a blueprint for other states to protect their citizens against illegal immigration,” the senator stated. “Our administration will not stand on the sidelines and watch as the Biden Border Crisis continues to spiral out of control.”
