Florida Boy, 5, Dies after Drinking Meth-Laced Juice; Mom in Custody: Riviera PD

Miami Standard (Riviera, FL) – A Florida mother is facing serious charges after her 5-year-old son died from ingesting methamphetamine through his apple juice container.

Heather Opsincs has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in connection with her son’s death, the Riviera Police Department confirmed in a press release. Authorities responded to an apartment on Beach Court around 5:30 p.m. on March 23 after receiving a report of a child not breathing. The boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Incident Details

According to a probable cause affidavit, the child was under the care of a babysitter when he grabbed a bottle of apple juice. The babysitter stated that after taking a sip, the child immediately spit it out, saying it “tasted weird.” Moments later, he exhibited distressing symptoms, including shivering, shaking, and blue lips. The babysitter called Opsincs, who attempted CPR while waiting for emergency responders.

During an interview with detectives, Opsincs stated that she was outside cleaning a cooler when she was informed about her son’s condition. When she returned, she found him experiencing seizure-like symptoms and fading vital signs. Despite her efforts, he could not be saved.

Investigation Findings

Opsincs initially denied using drugs but later tested positive for methamphetamine—twice. Her son’s toxicology report also showed the presence of meth. A search of her apartment revealed what authorities described as “deplorable” conditions, with rotting food and trash scattered throughout. Officers also recovered six glass pipes, all testing positive for methamphetamine.

Authorities discovered that this was not the first safety concern regarding the child. Two months earlier, Opsincs reportedly called poison control after the boy licked bleach inside their home. Investigators allege her negligence and the unsuitable living environment contributed to his tragic death.

Legal Proceedings

During a pretrial hearing on Friday, a judge described the case as “pretty egregious,” according to local NBC affiliate WPTV. Opsincs remains in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail with her bond set at $100,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 22.
