An Arizona man is facing a manslaughter charge after five dogs allegedly under his care escaped and attacked another man, who later died from his injuries, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Just after 6 a.m. on Sunday, March 30, deputies responded to a 911 call on West Camino Tierra in Tucson and found 43-year-old Kevin Renguul lying in the road with severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital but died three days later, on Wednesday, April 2.
Following an investigation, detectives identified 60-year-old Martin Martinez as the individual responsible for the dogs at the time of the attack. Authorities allege that the five dogs escaped from a nearby property under Martinez’s care before attacking Renguul.
Initially, Martinez was charged with felony endangerment and felony assault by a vicious animal. After Renguul’s death, the charges were upgraded to include manslaughter.
Martinez is currently being held at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on a $275,000 bond.
According to officials, the dogs involved in the attack were taken into custody by the Pima Animal Care Center. The animals reportedly had a history of aggression and had previously attacked a neighbor, the sheriff’s office stated.
The investigation remains ongoing.
