Fentanyl Overdose Crisis: Biden Administration and Local Govt Support NARCAN in Drug Overdose Reversal Kits

The Biden Administration imposed sanctions against 2 Mexico-based companies and 15 Mexican citizens. The reason behind the sanctions they say, is the ties to the drug trafficking organizations mainly responsible for opioid crisis in US.

As per authorities, The Beltran Leyva Cartel is the most notorious and powerful drug network in the world. Fentanyl, Oxycodone and Heroine are the main supplies of this network in the US.

The administration is trying to combat the crisis that has shooked down every major US city. Iowa city reported more than 200 opioid related deaths in 2022. The Fentanyl seizures have skyrocketed with 500% increase.

High-school students are the most vulnerable victims. Reports of teenage drug overdose are doing rounds as major highlights everyday.

Recently, the White House has sent a letter to schools that highlighted the importance of having NARCAN on the campus.

NARCAN is over-the-counter nasal spray that has been approved by FDA. This spray can reverse an overdose from opioids. It is effective against Heroin, Fentanyl and other prescription opioid medications.

The government is putting up free vending machines to distribute NARCAN to the local public.

Gwinnett County in Georgia took an initiative to educate public about how they can help the overdosed person. Parents and community members came together for NARCAN training. Recently, there are nine reported cases of overdose in Lilburn, mainly outside bars and high schools, and NARCAN was administered in every of these incidents which potentially saved their lives.

On 6th December 2023, Wilmington City Councilperson Zanthia Oliver and Dr. Sandra Gibney, of Gibney’s Mobile Health Care distributed opioid rescue kit in Wilmington. They along with several community members distributed door knockers and NARCAN loaded opioid rescue kits.
