Feds announce 30+ arrests related to narcotics and handgun trafficking enterprise

MIAMI — The results of Operation Showdown were disclosed on Monday by the Department of Justice.

The mission lasted 60 days and aimed to target narcotics and gun traffickers in South Florida.

“Today I’m pleased to announce that our community in South Florida is safer,” stated Hayden O’Byrne, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. “Many of those are repeat offenders with significant criminal histories.”

Officials said 31 people were arrested in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, with more on the way.

Officials reported that 27 of those arrested have been convicted offenders.

“I want to recognize the outstanding efforts of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the United States Marshal’s Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigation,” said Gordon Mallory, Acting SAC with the ATF Miami Field Division.

Officials said 80 firearms were seized, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

“Ten of those were stolen, seven were linked to prior shootings including a homicide,” according to O’Byrne.

The authorities seized six kilograms of fentanyl, six pounds of meth, flakka, tusi (commonly known as “pink cocaine”), and crack. Photos reveal that the fentanyl was pressed to look like OxyContin tablets made by the manufacturer.

“One of the undercovers was told by a defendant that you have to cut the fentanyl because this is really strong, it’ll kill someone,” according to O’Byrne.

Authorities are also searching for Jonathan Eric Brown Jr., a fugitive wanted for drug charges.

“As we’ve been directed by the president, we’re taking back America and whether it’s one street corner at a time,” according to O’Byrne.
