El Paso Police Arrest Driver of Nissan Sports Car After High-Speed Chase

A man in a sports car has been arrested on charges that he constantly hid from El Paso police and almost hit a police sergeant with his car, according to court officials.

Detectives caught 21-year-old Luis Alberto Ruiz Jr. after getting a tip that helped them identify him. The case was featured as a Crime of the Week earlier this month, and an assistant district attorney spoke about it at Ruiz’s teleconference bond hearing on April 27.

El Paso County Jail records show that Ruiz was arrested on two felony counts of evading arrest with a vehicle and one felony count of aggravated assault against a public worker.

Ruiz is still being held at the Downtown jail on a $160,000 bond.

Judge Ruben Nuñez, Magistrate, refused to lower the bond at the meeting, citing the type of crime and “the future safety of the community and law enforcement officers.”

The court records show that Ruiz is on suspended probation after pleading guilty last year to assaulting a peace officer. This was after being arrested in connection with a shooting at a house party in 2023.
