EB lanes reopen following gunfire on Palmetto Expressway

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. — A teenage girl was shot Tuesday night while traveling on the eastbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway, prompting a major police response and hours-long traffic delays.

Florida Highway Patrol and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded around Northwest 47th Avenue, where the expressway was shut down for roughly two hours as authorities investigated.

“Female, shot to the left chest with an exit wound to the left clavicle we’re going to Ryder,” a dispatcher was heard saying.

Traffic cameras showed a significant police presence and miles of backed-up vehicles. Some drivers were seen turning around and going the wrong way in an attempt to exit the expressway.

According to FHP, the gunfire came from a black Chevy Malibu, which opened fire on a white Hyundai sedan. The teenage girl, a passenger in the Hyundai, was shot in the chest. She was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, though her current condition remains unknown.

Authorities have not confirmed what led to the shooting and say the exact circumstances are still under investigation.

Police are searching for the black Chevy Malibu, which may have one blue fog light, and urge anyone with information to contact Florida Highway Patrol immediately.
