Drunk Driver Arrested after Hot Police Chase in Wisconsin; Deputy Approached Car as Driver was Passed Out Behind the Wheel
Manitowoc County, WI:
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 33-year-old man from Gibson, Wisconsin, was taken into custody early on Monday morning after he led deputies on a 9-minute pursuit over 14-1/2 miles in the northeastern region of the county.
The incident started when a deputy was sent to the intersection of West Zander Road and County B regarding a 2021 Ford F250 pickup truck that was stopped in the incorrect lane of travel and had a drunk driver.
A responding deputy made many attempts to grab the owner’s attention to make sure he wasn’t having a medical issue, according to the sheriff’s office.
The man eventually woke up, acknowledged the deputy, started to rev the car’s engine, and then drove away from the deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office stated that the start of the automobile pursuit was partly determined by obvious indicators of intoxication and open alcohol consumption in the car.
After 9 minutes and 14-1/2 miles of pursuit, other responding deputies used tire deflation devices to help slow down the car and put an end to the chase as reported by a local news outlet.
The driver, a Gibson, Wisconsin man whose name was withheld, was taken to the Manitowoc County Jail and placed under arrest on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated—a fourth offense—fleeing or eluding an officer, second-degree reckless endangering safety, operating a vehicle while in possession of a suspended driver’s license, and operating a vehicle with open intoxicants.
