Driver Crashes on I-94; Police Find Whippets, Alcohol, and Marijuana in Car

St. Clair Shores, MI – A high-speed crash on I-94 shut down the freeway for hours Thursday, April 3, after a 21-year-old driver lost control and collided with a semi truck and another vehicle. Authorities later discovered whippet canisters, open intoxicants, and suspected marijuana inside the driver’s car.

The crash occurred just before noon in the eastbound lanes near 10 Mile Road. Police say the driver entered the freeway at excessive speed and attempted to squeeze between vehicles before striking the semi and another car.

The impact left the driver and her passenger injured, requiring hospitalization. While no one else was hurt, the crash caused significant damage, including a large oil spill from the semi truck that forced an extended freeway closure.

Authorities kept eastbound I-94 closed for several hours as crews worked to clean the spill. The freeway reopened around 7 p.m.

During their investigation, police found multiple whippet canisters, open alcohol containers, and suspected marijuana inside the suspect’s vehicle. Officials are now seeking a search warrant for a blood draw to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing, and potential charges are pending.
