Delaware Woman Shot Dead after Hot Chase which ended in Pennsylvania; Car and Body Brutally Riddled with Bullets: Family

A police chase began with an effort to execute a warrant in Delaware and concluded with a tragic incident involving law enforcement in Chester, Pennsylvania.

A woman on the 300 block of North Madison Street in Wilmington managed to escape in a vehicle when police attempted to serve her a warrant on Tuesday morning.

Family members confirmed on Tuesday night that the woman has been identified as 22-year-old Yazmyn Stewart. Authorities have reported that a suspect has been apprehended for her suspected involvement in a shooting incident that occurred on December 2, 2023, in the vicinity of the 500 block of West 8th Street.

“The female was wanted, and there was an active warrant, and that’s why she fled from police,” noted Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky.

Stewart led authorities on a pursuit to the 2100 block of Market Street Chichester, Pa. where she ultimately crashed her vehicle and reportedly discharged firearms at law enforcement officers.

“It was probably two or three magazines that got emptied, and then a black Tahoe with the window blown out came back down the ramp, passed the police officers,” Rapp recalled.

During the incident, two Delaware state troopers also discharged their firearms. However, it remains uncertain whether Stewart was hit.

John Rapp, who witnessed the incident, was driving down the highway in Chichester at the time and claims to have seen police open fire.

According to authorities, the woman proceeded to steal a dark-colored SUV and subsequently drove to Chester, resulting in a collision with a building. Stewart managed to enter a residence at the intersection of 12th and Kerlin streets by climbing through a window.

Justin Burton shared details with Action News regarding a concerning phone call he received from his girlfriend, who was present in the residence during the incident.

“She kept calling me, so I finally just answered and she was like, ‘Justin, someone broke into the house, someone broke into the house,'” Burton said.

Burton’s girlfriend informed him that the suspect appeared to be visibly injured.

“‘She was bleeding, she must’ve gotten shot,'” Burton said, relaying the conversation. “And it’s like, ‘Be quiet, don’t worry about it. Just chill, just be cool.'”

Upon leaving the residence, the individual in question absconded with both the firearm and the keys to the homeowner’s vehicle. She tried to escape in a maroon sedan, but officers resorted to using their firearms.

“They must’ve gone to the front, the cops, because she got my baby mama’s keys and her gun and hopped in the car and tried to pull off,” Burton said. “And that’s when they started shooting the car up.”

Tragically, Stewart lost his life in the incident.

A Wilmington officer was transported to the hospital for evaluation of a minor injury. There have been no additional injuries reported.

According to investigators, several officers from different police departments discharged their firearms during the incident.

A section of Interstate 95 was temporarily closed near the incident in Chester during midday on Tuesday, but the road has now been reopened.
