Deadly Crash on Rural Highway Claims 8 Lives, Including 2 High School Basketball Players

Reports say that two students from Oklahoma were on their way back from a youth basketball event when they were among the eight people killed in a crash on a rural Kansas highway.

Two cars crashed on U.S. Highway 169 outside of Greeley on May 4, killing Donald ‘DJ’ Laster, a student at Booker T. Washington High School, Wayne Walls, a former coach and teacher, and Ja’mon Gilstrap, a transportation worker for Tulsa Public Schools. The crash was reported by CBS affiliate KOTV, Fox affiliate WDAF-TV, and NBC affiliate KSHB.

Schools in Union Public Schools said that another 9th grader had died. accounts say that three other people were also involved. One person made it out alive and was taken to the hospital.

People asked the Kansas Highway Patrol and school districts for comments, but they didn’t answer right away.

The Kansas Highway Patrol told KOTV that Gilstrap was taking people from the schools south on the highway that Sunday when he crossed into the northbound lane to pass another car. A car coming the other way in the northbound lane tried to swerve, and Gilstrap did too, but the two cars crashed into each other.

A trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol told CBS News, “Both cars burned up.” The news source said that the crash was still being looked into as of Monday, May 5.

People who were hurt in the terrible crash and the school districts have been in mourning since then.

The head of Tulsa Public Schools, Dr. Ebony Johnson, told WDAF-TV in a statement, “Many parts of our Tulsa Public Schools family are in mourning today.”

“I am so sorry for the families who lost loved ones. I promise to honour the huge effect that all of these people had on Tulsa and on the lives of our young people,” she said. I’m praying for their families and everyone involved. I hope that other people will continue to support our kids, team members, and families who are hurting.

After the unidentified 9th grader was killed, Union Superintendent Dr. John Federline shared a message on Facebook to show his condolences. The school district said that their crisis response team was called in and that counselling was provided.

In a video from Tulsa Public Schools that CBS News got, Laster’s old teacher, Ron Horton, talked about how committed he was to his sports.

Horton said, “He stood out because he was friendly and made kids feel at ease.” “Anything was so easy for them around DJ.” He smiled all the time.
