DC Gets New Affordable Housing Building, Residents Will Leave Zero Carbon Footprints
On Tuesday, builders and D.C. officials began construction on an affordable housing complex that will be completely green and have no carbon footprint.
Eighteen low-income families will reside at the Truxton neighborhood’s Cycle House building on North Capitol Street. It is made to reduce pollution by using solar panels and other technologies.
The District will require additional housing since the city’s population increased for the second year in a row, according to recent Census data. More than 8,000 more people live in D.C., based on current data. More people moved into the District than left for the first time since before the plague. Currently, D.C. is home to about 680,000 people.
The North Capitol Street building is scheduled for completion in 2025.
“This is about making sure that as a city we’re doing our part in controlling climate change,” said Nina Albert, the acting deputy mayor for planning and economic development. “I think what’s unusual, though, and the unique opportunity to a resident about having a net-zero building, is that now your operating costs come down.”
