Daughter received Social Security payments for her Dead Mother; Facing Trail in Alabama
Mobile, AL: According to court records, an Alabama lady admitted to taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in Social Security benefits meant for her late mother.
Deleria Huff, a resident of Mobile, Alabama, continued to receive benefits designated for her mother, Pauline Huff, for thirty years after her death, according to the documents. The Social Security Administration was unaware of this fact.
The 69-year-old stole $337,642 from the government between 1991 and 2020, plus a stimulus grant of $1,200 meant for her late mother.
It was after a Medicare non-utilization audit suggested her mother might have passed away that Huff’s crime was discovered. In 2020, Huff informed an SSA agent that her mother was still residing with her, but that she was unable to communicate due to dementia.
Until Huff could get her mother to the nearest Social Security office, her benefits would be halted. A plea deal states that she informed authorities about her mother’s death at a later date, explaining that she had been receiving Social Security payments into a joint bank account with her mother and that she had needed them to pay her bills.
