Dad dives off Disney cruise ship to save daughter who had fallen overboard

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A father reportedly jumped off a Disney Cruise Line ship returning to Port Everglades on Sunday after his daughter fell overboard.

According to USA Today, the family had been on the Disney Dream and was returning to Fort Lauderdale after a four-night vacation to the Bahamas.

A passenger turned to social media after the father and daughter were rescued by crew personnel, claiming the girl had fallen from the fourth deck.

Roy Ramos of Local 10 News spoke with passenger Monica Shannon, who said she was taking pictures with her family when she saw the girl fall overboard.

“They were playing shuffleboard so it was on the fourth floor,” she informed me. “I think the parents were playing and the little girl was climbing up on the railing and went (over), flew off.”

Local 10 News received video of rescue crews coming and hauling the two to safety after some harrowing moments in the water.

“She didn’t know how to swim and the dad couldn’t find her at first,” Shannon told me.

According to cruise expert Stewart Chiron, it is uncommon for someone to go overboard, considering the safety precautions taken by cruise lines to prevent this from occurring.

“They have the railings, so there is an an industry standard as far as the height of the railings,” he told me. “And unlike other cruise lines, there’s plexiglass along the railings to prevent young kids from sticking their arms out, throwing toys out into the water.”

Chiron believes cameras on deck captured what happened.

“There are closed circuit TV cameras,” he informed me. “There’s overman, overboard detection systems, warning signs, the railings, like the plexiglass below the railings to protect the young ones.”

“The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesman told Local 10 News in a statement Monday. “We thank our Crew Members for their great abilities and rapid actions, which resulted in the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to our guests’ safety and well-being, and this occurrence demonstrates the success of our safety practices.

The statement did not specify how the girl fell overboard. Her age was not immediately revealed.
