Coroner identifies South Carolina man who died in Irmo police custody

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died after being apprehended by Irmo police last week.

Byron Jackson, 45, of North Augusta, died after being detained by police in the New Friarsgate neighborhood early Sunday morning, June 22, according to a coroner’s office news release issued Monday.

According to an Irmo Police Department press release, Jackson was apprehended around 2 a.m. following a car chase that concluded at the Dollar General on the 7800 block of Broad River Road. Police were responding to a complaint of a fight inside a car, but according to the statement, Jackson was alone in the vehicle when cops approached him.

Jackson then “engaged in an altercation with officers before being taken into custody,” according to a police department announcement. He then “began having trouble breathing,” according to police, and was given CPR before being sent to a nearby hospital.

The police department was told Wednesday that Jackson had died, according to a department announcement, although neither the police nor the coroner determined the cause of death.

According to Irmo police, two officers are on leave as a result of the event, and the state Law Enforcement Division is conducting an investigation.

“This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the individual involved,” Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale said in a statement on Friday. “We take situations like this very seriously and are fully collaborating with SLED’s independent inquiry. We are committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining the public’s trust in our department.

“We will continue working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to fully investigate this incident,” Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford said in a statement.
