Miami Beach, Florida – A Hungarian national who was about to be deported deactivated his ankle monitor before murdering two men in Miami-Dade County, prompting an inquiry that led to his arrest, federal authorities said.
Surveillance camera showed the suspect, Zsolt Zsolyomi, 25, and Carlos Alonso Villaquiran, 66, entering Villaquiran’s apartment unit at 1010 Pennsylvania Ave. in South Beach on November 1.
It’s likely that the crippled Villaquiran was last seen alive.
According to Miami Beach Police, Zsolyomi strangled the victim. His body was discovered face down in his bathtub on November 21.
Police said Zsolyomi would strike again two months later, this time in Miami, killing another man.
According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he should never have been on the streets or able to allegedly commit a crime spree in the first place.
According to police, Zsolyomi was observed partying on Halloween night, weeks before Villaquiran was murdered. Evidence video shows the suspect still wearing his ankle band.
According to investigators, the monitor was placed on him a month ago by ICE officers at the Krome Detention Centre in West Miami-Dade.
According to an ICE spokeswoman, in July 2024, “Miami Beach Police arrested Zsolyomi for strong-arm robbery, [and] he was encountered by ICE” shortly after.
According to federal investigators, the Hungarian was in the United States illegally and was set to be deported, but in September, an ICE statement states, “He was processed and then released” with the GPS monitor.
Days later, ICE agents stated that they received a “tamper alert on Zsolyomi’s device,” and “he absconded.”
So, while a fugitive, he was out partying on Halloween, reportedly abusing his romantic partner, and then allegedly committing murder — not once, but twice — before being apprehended by City of Miami Police.
Zsolyomi’s trial is now pending. His next court appearance is planned in September.
