Colorado Ski Coach in Custody for Child Sexual Assault; Fired from Job after Allegations Surfaced

Denver, CO – Jared Hedges, a ski coach for Team Summit Colorado, has been fired following his arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a 9-year-old youngster on his ski team. The Denver-based group US SafeSport verified to CBS News Colorado that Hedges’ employment was terminated.

According to the victim’s and family’s attorneys, the alleged event occurred when the child was on a ski team trip organized by Hedges, 48, in Taos, New Mexico. The victim resides in Summit County, according to the attorney’s office. Hedges is from Frisco, according to officials.

The Taos County Sheriff confirmed that deputies responded to an incident in the Taos Ski Valley on March 22 and identified Hedges as the suspect. Investigators said Hedges was the coach “on a training trip with a group of ski students from Colorado” skiing at Taos Ski Valley.

Taos County Sheriff’s officers detained Hedges and charged him with criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact. He was booked into Taos County Adult Detention Center without incident, according to the sheriff.

“We’re deeply concerned there may be additional victims. These kinds of crimes are often committed by repeat offenders, and for years, Jared Hedges was responsible for travel logistics and controlling sleeping arrangements for young children,” said Jason Jordan, attorney for the victim and family, in a statement. “We fear there are other children who may be too scared to come forward, and we want them to know that they are not alone and that it’s important that they speak up. We’re strongly urging state and federal law enforcement to open a full investigation into the matter, and we’re hopeful our partners in the media will help amplify this call so that other victims and their families feel safe coming forward.”

Hedges is a certified coach with U.S. Ski & Snowboard. U.S. SafeSport is also in charge of investigating sexual assault allegations involving US Olympic athletes.

According to the victim’s and family’s attorneys, “Team Summit is widely considered one of the premier ski clubs feeding skiers into U.S. Ski & Snowboard.”

Team Summit issued the following statement to CBS News Colorado: “We are shocked and horrified by the news that one of our coaches has been accused of sexual assault of a minor on one of our teams. Team Summit takes these allegations seriously, as the well-being of all of our athletes is of paramount importance. Upon learning of the allegation, we immediately reported it to the U.S. Center for SafeSport as required by our National Governing Body, US Ski and Snowboard, and terminated the employee. We are cooperating fully with the local authorities, SafeSport, and other authorities in their investigation.”
