Oak Brook, IL – A Chicago man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing merchandise from several stores before leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in Oak Brook on Saturday night.
Miguel Roman, 38, has been charged with two felony counts of burglary, two felony counts of retail theft, and one felony count of aggravated fleeing and eluding. He also faces multiple traffic and petty offenses, including driving without a valid driver’s license, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
DuPage Judge Joshua Dieden granted the prosecution’s request to deny Roman pre-trial release.
Retail Theft Turns Into Police Pursuit
At approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, Villa Park police responded to a report of retail theft at a Burlington store. Authorities allege that Roman and two accomplices filled carts with merchandise and left the store without paying. The trio then ran to a 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan, loaded the stolen goods, and fled the scene.
A Lombard police officer later located the minivan parked at the Yorktown Mall near HomeGoods and Marshalls. The officer observed Roman exit one of the stores carrying a duffel bag before getting into the vehicle. When the officer attempted a traffic stop with emergency lights and sirens, Roman allegedly sped off.
Roman reportedly drove over a curb, through a grassy parkway near a restaurant, and onto west Butterfield Road, where he ran a red light at Highland Avenue. During his escape, he allegedly struck another vehicle carrying three occupants, including two juveniles, causing significant damage to the front end and passenger side.
Police Deploy Spike Strips, Suspect Attempts to Flee
Authorities deployed multiple spike strips to stop the fleeing minivan. Despite deflated tires, Roman continued to evade police, weaving into oncoming traffic and driving in the center turn lane. The chase ended near Summit Avenue and Butterfield Road in Oak Brook when officers boxed in the vehicle.
Officers ordered Roman to exit the vehicle. When he opened the door, he fell to the ground and was subsequently taken into custody. Medics transported him to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. The two other occupants of the vehicle were charged at the scene and released on their own recognizance.
Stolen Merchandise Recovered
A search of the minivan uncovered shopping bags from HomeGoods and Marshalls containing approximately $1,364 worth of stolen items, including clothes, footwear, and nail polish. Officers also discovered garbage bags filled with merchandise allegedly taken from the Burlington store in Villa Park, valued at approximately $2,123.
Roman is scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
