Californians To Get Middle-Class Tax Refund: Eligibility for $1,050 Rebate
California’s Middle-Class Tax Refund payments began arriving in bank accounts and mailboxes in early October. Approximately 23 million residents of California are eligible for these payments.
To determine your eligibility, you can visit the official website of the State of California’s Franchise Tax Board. It was anticipated that the majority of payments would be issued in October by the Franchise Tax Board.
Individual taxpayers earning $75,000 or less will receive a one-time payment of $350. Married couples who file their taxes jointly and have an annual income of $150,000 or less will be eligible for a payment of $700. Households that meet the requirements will also be entitled to an extra $350 if they have eligible dependents.
Individuals earning between $75,000 and $250,000 will be eligible for a gradual benefit, capped at $250. Households with eligible dependents may receive an additional $250.
Eligibility
You are eligible if you:
- Filed your 2023 tax return by October 15.
- Meet the California adjusted gross income (CA AGI) limits.
Also, you must meet the following requirements:
- Were not eligible to be claimed as a dependent in the tax year.
- A California resident for six months or more of the tax year.
- Are a California resident on the date the payment is issued
Receiving the Payment
Residents of California can expect to receive their MCTR payment through either direct deposit or a debit card.
Typically, eligible taxpayers who e-filed their 2020 CA tax return and received their CA tax refund by direct deposit will receive direct deposit payments. Remaining eligible taxpayers will receive their MCTR debit card payments by mail.
You will receive your payment by mail in the form of a debit card if you:
- Filed a paper return
- Had a balance due
- Received your Golden State Stimulus (GSS) payment by check
- Received your tax refund by check regardless of filing method
Conclusion
Recipients who were eligible for Golden State Stimulus payments and received them via direct deposit should have noticed the deposit of their Middle-Class Tax Refund between October 7 and October 25. The remaining direct deposits were scheduled to take place from October 28 to November 14.
If you have received your California stimulus payments through a debit card, it is expected that you have also been issued the Middle-Class Tax Refund through the same method of payment.
This refund should have been received between October 24 and December 10. Debit card payments that are still pending will be issued by January 14, 2025.
