Do you think your car’s license plate could use some flair? Perhaps a sleek tinted cover or a reflective finish to evade those toll road cameras? Think again. In California, even putting a little personalised style to your license plate can result in a misdemeanour.

According to California Vehicle Code Section 4464 (CVC 4464), your license plate has only one purpose: to be entirely, mistakenly visible. When vehicle owners try to get creative with their front and back plates, things can get a bit problematic legally.

Specifically, it is unlawful to use a clear or tinted cover that reduces visibility. Using reflecting sprays or materials that deflect toll or traffic cameras is likewise prohibited by this regulation. Vinyl wraps, sometimes known as “skins,” and paint are not permitted either.

Furthermore, it is illegal to put phoney numbers or stickers, including decals, to the plate or registration sticker. The same is true for blocking any area of the plate with a frame, tow hitch, bike rack, or even dried mud from an off-road trip.

Basically, if a police officer or red light camera cannot read it properly, it is a violation.

Penalties for violators

According to California officials, breaking CVC 4464 is a misdemeanour punishable by a fine of at least $500. Furthermore, if you are detected driving with an altered or obstructed license plate, your car may be towed and your plate confiscated and returned to the DMV.

“You’ll be on the hook for impound fees—and left without a plate,” San Diego Police Department officials warned. “License plates belong to the State of California. It is not your responsibility to modify.”

Some drivers with altered plates may receive a warning, although this is not always the case.

How to customise your plate lawfully

For individuals who are adamant about getting a personalised license plate, there are various legal solutions.

Special interest license plates

Drivers can get a personalised or special interest plate from the DMV by completing the Special Interest Plate Application.

“Special interest license plates, available for autos, commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles, offer a unique opportunity to support causes you care about, while special license plates allow you to recognise service, achievements, licenses, status, historical significance, and various occupations,” according to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Special interest license plates include those that promote breast cancer awareness, national park conservation, pet spaying and neutering, and the environment. Others acknowledge veterans’ organisations, firefighters, California agriculture, and other entities.

Prepare to pay a charge for this customisation. Special interest plates may cost between $50 and $103 for the initial application. The renewal charge ranges from $40 to $83 every year, depending on the plate ordered. These payments are in addition to the usual registration price.

Digitised license plates

Another alternative for Golden State drivers is digital license plates, which were legalised by Assembly Bill No. 984. Reviver, a technological business, is the exclusive provider of these plates. Drivers can select between a battery-powered and a hardwired version.

These plates can be personalised with text, typefaces, and even switched from light to dark mode. They can also show emergency warnings, like Amber Alerts in abduction cases. Furthermore, digital license plates have tracking technology that might help locate stolen automobiles.

This alternative is a lot more expensive. Though prices may differ when purchased from local dealerships or authorised resellers, the Reviver website advertises the plates for $899 altogether. There is also a subscription option for approximately $40 each month.

Whatever customisation options you select, your license plate is more than just a vehicle decoration; it is also a legal identifying tag. And in California, it must be fully visible and unchanged.
