Bronx Apartment Drug Bust Nets Two Fugitives, Fentanyl and Cocaine Confiscated by Cops

New York City, NY: On May 13, federal prosecutors announced that the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force had executed an unrelated arrest warrant at a residence in the Spuyten Duyvil section of The Bronx. During the operation, they discovered a quantity of over 12 kilogrammes (25 pounds) of suspected fentanyl and cocaine, as well as $100,000.

Federal prosecutors state that on Wednesday, May 8, at approximately 6 a.m., when police from the Fugitive Task Force entered 536 Kappock Street, Apt. 6E, they made the accidental discovery of a cache of narcotics and equipment for packaging drugs.

New York Drug Enforcement Task Force (NYDETF) agents were notified and subsequently apprehended the drugs during a search authorized by the court, according to the authorities. They also mentioned that the fugitive arrest warrant’s subject, a lady, and another person were inside the flat at the time.

On Monday, federal prosecutors announced that the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) had filed a criminal complaint charging 36-year-old Bronx resident Jonathan Corona and 43-year-old Bronx resident Aracely Ortiz—the subjects of the fugitive arrest warrant—with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance each.

New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban, New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York Ralph Sozio, New York City SNP Bridget G. Brennan, Frank A. Tarentino III, Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban announced the arrests on Monday, following arraignments that they said occurred over the weekend in Manhattan Criminal Court.

According to the criminal complaint, on May 8, at approximately 6 a.m., members of the Fugitive Task Force went to 536 Kappock Street, Apt. 6E, and saw Ortiz inside the bedroom and Corona supposedly coming out of it.

With the help of the SNP Investigators Unit, personnel of NYDETF, Group T-22, raided the two-bedroom flat later that day, at approximately 1.35 p.m. Agents and cops allegedly found a scale, many glassine envelopes containing fentanyl, and other packaging paraphernalia for narcotics on a glass-topped table inside the first bedroom. Authorities said they found three brick-shaped white fentanyl parcels and two brick-shaped black cocaine packages in a bedroom closet safe.

In the second bedroom, agents and officers allegedly found a money counter, around $100,000 in cash, six brick-shaped cocaine bundles in a huge bag, and three glass jars with fentanyl in them. The flat also contained ten more packages of an unknown chemical.

Field tests on drugs found in the safe tested positive for fentanyl and cocaine, according to US authorities. According to them, the DEA laboratory study of the drugs found in the flat is still ongoing.
