Bay Area Job Market Hit by Layoffs: Major Store Chain and Biotech Company Announce Job Cuts

San Francisco, CA- Recent rounds of layoffs have impacted the unstable job market in the Bay Area, as a major store and a local biotech company have announced significant staff reductions, resulting in the loss of hundreds of jobs.

Cepheid, a biotech and medical devices firm, and Target have recently announced job reductions in their filings with the state Employment Development Department.

Workers in Sunnyvale, East Palo Alto, and Fremont are being affected by the recent rounds of job cuts, as indicated by the WARN notices sent by the two companies to the state EDD.

In the coming weeks, over 700 workers in the Bay Area will unfortunately be losing their jobs due to recent layoff announcements from Cepheid and Target.

Find out how the layoffs will impact employees at the three Bay Area locations, as detailed in the WARN notices:

Cepheid is reducing its workforce, with 624 employees in Sunnyvale being laid off and 11 employees in Fremont facing staffing reductions.

Target is reducing its workforce at its store located at 1775 East Bayshore Road in East Palo Alto, resulting in 83 job cuts.

The Cepheid layoffs are scheduled for September 27th.

“Cepheid will offer all impacted associates on-site outplacement services provided by a third-party vendor, free of charge,” C.J. Schrotenboer, Cepheid’s vice president of human resources, wrote in the WARN letter to the EDD.

Both companies have characterized their job cuts as permanent, as stated in the WARN letters.

Job cuts are happening at Target due to the permanent closure of the East Palo Alto store.

Several Target stores in the Bay Area have been forced to close down due to ongoing issues with crime, particularly theft. It seemed like this shutdown by the retailing giant was anything but simple.

The Target layoffs are scheduled to take place on September 28, according to the retailer’s WARN notice.

“After much consideration, we have decided to close our East Palo Alto store due to prolonged underperformance,” Target stated in comments emailed to this news organization.

“We’re grateful to our team at this store, and we’re working with all eligible team members to offer them an opportunity to transfer to other Target locations,” Target said in the emailed comments.
