Bank Robber Held Two Hostages; Sniper Shot Robber Dead; Bullet Pierced Monitor and then Suspect as Negotiator Distracted Robber into Talking to Him: Fort Myers Authorities

Recently released video footage from Florida police captures a remarkable incident where a sniper successfully neutralizes a bank robber. The bullet manages to pass through a desktop computer and navigate between two hostages before ultimately hitting the suspect, resulting in a fatal outcome.

In a dramatic turn of events on February 6, a 36-year-old man made an ill-fated attempt to rob a Bank of America in Fort Myers. As the police closed in on him, he resorted to taking two innocent people hostage inside an office of the bank.

A suspect claimed to have an explosive device and positioned himself behind the hostages, using them as a shield, while a negotiator attempted to persuade him to surrender.

However, the situation took a sudden turn when one of the hostages was unexpectedly put in a headlock by the robber, who then held a knife to her throat. This prompted the officers to quickly respond and take action.

Video footage released by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office captured the intense scene as SWAT officers took up positions outside the bank’s entrance, with a sniper carefully aiming his rifle with the support of another officer.

A sniper trained his rifle on a suspect, whose head was barely visible above a computer monitor across the room as per The Post.

“Please continue to communicate with me. I am interested in understanding your current thoughts and feelings,” the negotiator requested.

Shortly after, the sniper fired their weapon and a gunshot echoed through the air.

In the bank office, a bullet tore through the computer monitor, creating a hole, before hitting the robber who was hiding behind the two hostages.

In the video, the suspect collapses to the ground while the hostages quickly disperse, seeking safety in various directions.

Officers swiftly entered the office, deploying flash grenades to ensure the suspect was neutralized and the hostages were unharmed.

“Shooting positions like these are trained regularly by snipers for time critical incidents like these,” Lt. Todd Olmer of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office explained alongside the video, describing the shoulder-steadied shot.

“Due to the suspect’s limited exposure the sniper took a planned and deliberate shot through a computer monitor, striking the suspect in the center of the forehead, killing him instantly,” he said.

“Firing through barriers is a trained and routinely practiced skill by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office special operations unit snipers,” Olmer continued.

“The .308 caliber bullet used is specifically selected due to its known ballistic reliability traveling through intermediate barriers.”
