Los Angeles — A police officer was “ambushed” on June 25 while attempting to capture a man accused of a separate gunshot in Santa Monica, California, according to authorities.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the encounter occurred about 1 p.m. PT when an officer approached a man suspected to be the suspect in a Waymo car shooting on June 22. The gunfire, which occurred at 2nd Street and Broadway, injured two youths, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press and ABC News.
“As the officer attempted to detain him, the suspect fled on foot,” police stated in a news release. “During the brief pursuit, the suspect ambushed the officer and fired multiple rounds, striking him before fleeing the area.”
According to officials, the anonymous officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition. The incident occurred around 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue, near Santa Monica Place, the centerpiece of the Third Street Promenade shopping district, according to Public Information Officer Lt. Lewis Gilmour in an email to USA TODAY.
Police said the suspect was detained near Palisades Park, just north of where the shooting occurred, at 4:20 p.m. PT, thanks to a “timely tip from a resident.”
Police confirmed in a later post on X that the subject was the guy wanted in the Waymo shooting.
