Attempted Murder Suspect Escapes North Carolina Jail via Ventilation System

Miamistandard– According to authorities, an inmate broke out of a North Carolina jail over the weekend by escaping through the building’s ventilation system. According to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, guards at the jail detected that an inmate was missing on Sunday afternoon, which led law enforcement agencies across the state to begin a manhunt.

John Matthew Nigh, who escaped, was arrested last summer on several charges, including three counts of attempted murder. He allegedly shot at the deputies who eventually overpowered and apprehended him. Nigh’s bullets did not hit any of the cops, who first took him to a medical facility to address injuries that the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office described as “minor.”

Nigh was then taken to the Onslow County Detention Center and imprisoned there on a $5 million bond. According to booking records, he was moved to the Craven County Detention Center, which is approximately 50 miles away, in December.

According to the sheriff’s office, officers at the jail in Craven County discovered that Nigh was not in his cell at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday. The search that followed revealed that he had presumably made his way out through the ventilation system in the ceiling, exiting through the roof of the complex. Nigh’s cellmates are suspected of aiding him escape by removing the ceiling grating that he used to get into the ventilation system and then stuffing his bedding to make it look like he was still asleep in his cell.

Just after 11 a.m. on Monday morning, the sheriff of Craven County announced that a nationwide BOLO was issued to law enforcement in North Carolina. This was done while the Craven County Investigations Bureau and Special Investigations Bureau deputies began their investigation and started searching for the convict who was missing.

According to the sheriff’s office, “Nigh has been armed in past encounters with Law Enforcement Officers and should be considered dangerous.” “Anyone having information about his whereabouts should call the Craven County Sheriff’s Office at 252 633 2357, their local law enforcement agency or 911.”

According to the authorities’ description, Nigh is a Caucasian male who is 6 feet 2 inches tall. He has a tattoo of a cross on his upper right arm and a tattoo of his initials, “JMN,” on his upper left arm.

On Wednesday, CBS News reached out to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office to ask for further information about the manhunt, but they did not get a response right away.
