Armed Robbery Spree Convict Sentenced 26 Years in Federal Prison; Robbed Several Stores in SoCal & Arizona

Fontana, CA: The United States Department of Justice says that a serial robber was convicted and given a sentence of 26 years in federal prison.

The man is convicted of nine armed robberies across Southern California. The man is from Phoenix, Arizona.

The Department of Justice said in a news release on January 22 that Samuel Sven Smith, 28, went on a crime spree in the summer of 2022 that finished with a high-speed chase during which he shot at federal agents and then shot himself after police accidentally hit his car.

U.S. District Judge Jesus G. Bernal gave him a term and told him to pay $8,873 in restitution.

According to the Hobbs Act, Smith admitted to two counts of interfering with trade by robbery in May 2023. He also admitted to two counts of brandishing and firing a firearm during a violent crime.

After committing a series of violent robberies in Arizona, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties from July 31, 2022, until his capture on August 20, 2022, Smith went on a break. Smith stated that he robbed a Big Lots store in Riverside and PetSmart stores in Orange, San Bernardino, Signal Hill, Fontana, Pico Rivera, Redlands, Phoenix, and Rancho Cucamonga.

In all nine of these thefts, Smith pointed a gun at shop employees to keep them in line.

Police Arrested Samuel Sven Smith on August 20, 2022, after a hot police chase. He can be seen wounded as he shot himself during the chase.

“Smith showed complete disregard for the safety of others when he went on his crime spree, threatening store employees with firearms and then opening fire on federal agents,” said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada in a press release.

“We cannot accept such blatant violence on our streets and my office is committed to doing all it can to protect the people of our district,” he also added.

Smith robbed the Rancho Cucamonga PetSmart store on August 20, 2022, and took $400 from a worker. When he left the store, he was met by police, including federal officers. After that, Smith shot at the police.

Smith then got into his car and sped off, leading police on a high-speed chase during which he fired his gun several times at the cops who were after him. When police crashed into Smith’s car, the chase was over.

Official records show that when police arrived at Smith’s car, they found a gunshot wound under his chin. This case’s criminal complaint includes an affidavit that says Smith told the cops who were trying to save his life that he accidentally shot himself when they crashed into his car.
