Armed Police Officers to be Stationed at Schools Across California As Per New Bill to Counter School Shootings

Sacramento, CA: A bill mandating the presence of armed cops at all California schools is part of a larger public safety package that has been proposed to the state legislature.

A California Assembly member is presenting a bill that would reinstate armed school police officers on campus, which is generating a great deal of debate as school districts throughout the state have been choosing not to have any cops there at all.

One of the three components of Assemblyman Bill Essayli’s public safety plan is Assembly Bill 3038. During school hours or whenever students are on campus, the measure would mandate that all K-12 schools in California have one armed officer present.

“California has experienced 96 school shootings between 2018 and 2023. If we want to get serious about school shootings and stopping them before they happen, we need good guys and girls with guns ready to act,” Essayli said.

The ACLU has criticized it as a poor government policy, which has led to criticism and anger.

The bill’s backers argue that having police officers present at schools is sometimes a question of life and death.

Some parents are supporting this initiative because they want school officers back to be present on campus again in the Sacramento City Unified School District, which has been without them since 2020.

Accusations of typical adolescent conduct are leading to numerous teen arrests, according to the ACLU.

Schools are under-resourced and over-criminalized, according to a 2021 research by the American Civil Liberties Union that examined data from schools across the country that had law enforcement present during the 2015–2016 school year. Further, they discovered that the likelihood of arrest for students with disabilities was roughly three times higher overall, and even closer to ten in some areas.
