Arizona County Attorney Faces Multiple Charges Including Harassment, Misuse of Funds

Michael Whiting, the Apache County Attorney, is currently facing a range of charges, including alleged harassment, sending an anonymous threatening message, misusing taxpayer dollars, theft, tampering with public records, and conflict of interest. These charges were announced by Attorney General Kris Mayes’ office on Tuesday and consist of a combination of misdemeanor and felony counts.
The indictment claims that public funds were misused, specifically alleging that over $5,000 was used to produce t-shirts for “Spelling for Success,” a program associated with Joyclynn Whiting, who is both the Apache County School Superintendent and Michael’s wife.
It is worth mentioning that the couple reportedly utilized public funds to acquire a 2023 Ford Expedition, valued at almost $80,000, using superintendent funds. Additionally, Greer is accused of making several unnecessary purchases, including fitness equipment, on behalf of his superior.
Additionally, she is being charged with two serious offenses: one related to the mishandling of public funds and another involving a potential conflict of interest. Daryl Greer, the county attorney’s assistant, is facing charges for alleged misconduct, including misuse of public funds, harassment, and sending a threatening or anonymous letter.
“Public officials are entrusted with the responsibility to serve their communities with integrity and honesty,” Mayes said in a statement. “When that trust is violated, it undermines public confidence in the workings of government. These are serious allegations, and my office is committed to ensuring a thorough and fair legal process as we pursue justice for the people of Apache County.”
According to a report by The Arizona Republic, there are restraining orders against Whiting from some members of his staff. Additionally, it is suggested that he may have used his position to provide support to a Norwegian pop star.
Apache County, located in northern Arizona, has come under the scrutiny of the Attorney General’s office following a warranted search that took place in June at Whiting’s office.
