Anti-Spiking Law: California Bars To Offer Drug Test Kits; Aims to Hinder Drink Tampering
Starting July 1, bars and similar establishments in California with Type 48 licenses will need to provide drug testing kits. This new legislation aims to prevent drink spiking.
According to the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, establishments are required to provide kits that can detect substances such as flunitrazepam, ketamine, and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid under AB 1013.
Drug-detecting kits can be sold or provided to customers.
In addition, bars are now required to prominently display a sign that says: “Don’t get roofied! Drink-spiking drug test kits available here. Ask a staff member for details.”

The mandatory signage aims to increase awareness and serve as a precautionary measure against drink tampering.
The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control cautions that failure to comply with the regulation may result in an administrative citation against the license, although it does not carry criminal charges.
The regulations will stay in effect until January 1, 2027, unless the Legislature decides to extend them as per NBC Los Angeles.
