EVANSVILLE — Kentucky authorities discharged an Indiana woman suspected of stealing a police SUV and other offenses from the hospital Wednesday and lodged her at the Daviess County jail.

Nina Adalina Devillez, 31, underwent treatment at an Owensboro, Kentucky, hospital following her arrest Monday. According to an Indiana State Police official, an officer in Chandler, Indiana, shot and injured Devillez when she approached him with what seemed to be a “sword.”

After receiving at least one gunshot wound, authorities believe Devillez stole a Chandler police SUV and reportedly drove it across state lines to Daviess County, reaching speeds of up to 130 mph before colliding in an open field. Following a brief foot pursuit, law enforcement arrested Devillez.

The circumstances surrounding Devillez’s transfer from the hospital to the Daviess County Jail reveal a growing issue of dispute in the case: According to Indiana court records, Devillez is a “female,” while her Kentucky jail booking records show her as a “male.”

According to a police document filed in Indiana court last year, Devilles identifies as transgender. Indiana State Police spokesperson Sgt. Todd Ringle told the Courier & Press earlier this week that Devillez was a “biological male.”

A call to the Daviess County jail asking if Devillez was housed in a male or female unit went unanswered Wednesday afternoon. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Devillez faces extradition to Indiana, where she is facing a slew of accusations in Warrick County. Devillez was out on bail in a different attempted murder case when she was arrested on Monday, according to court documents.

Devillez is charged with one Level 5 felony count of battery with bodily injury to a public safety officer, one Level 5 felony count of theft, one Level 6 felony auto theft, one Level 6 felony criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, one Level 6 felony resisting law enforcement using a vehicle, and one misdemeanour resisting law enforcement.

Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman stated that an extradition hearing will be place within days of Devillez’s release from the hospital to determine how quickly she may be taken into custody by Indiana officials.

“If Devillez waives extradition, Indiana law enforcement will be allowed to come get (her) and take (her) back to Indiana,” Youngman said in a news release on Tuesday. “If (she) fights extradition, a governor’s warrant will be issued and there will be another more detailed hearing within 30 days to determine if (she) can be forced to go back to Indiana to face charges there.”

Upon Devillez’s transfer to Indiana, she would be held at the Warrick County jail on a $15,000 bond, according to court records.

Devillez is also facing attempted murder and other charges in Lawrence County, Indiana, where she was arrested in connection with a November 2024 shooting.

In a written document, a Lawrence County law enforcement official stated that Devillez admitted to shooting a guy on November 4, but claimed she did so in self-defence after the man accosted her.

Devillez is accused of stealing the Chandler police SUV on Monday while out of jail on a $20,000 bond for attempted murder. On Tuesday, Lawrence County prosecutors moved to revoke Devillez’s bond and issued a warrant for her arrest.
