Alabama Mother Slit Throats of Her Two Sons; Will Spend Rest of Her Life in Jail for Heartbreaking Crimes; Many Demands Death Penalty

A 37-year-old woman in Alabama has been sentenced to life in prison for the tragic deaths of her two young sons. The heartbreaking incident involved the boys being strangled and having their throats slit.

Sarah Tapia Franco has been sentenced by Cullman County Circuit Judge Martha Williams to serve two life sentences in a state correctional facility. The slayings of 3-year-old Alvaro Garcia and 9-year-old Taylor Garcia have led to this decision, as announced by the authorities.

Following an indictment by a grand jury in early 2020, Franco recently pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder in the tragic deaths of the children. She faced an additional count of capital murder of two or more persons, but it was later dropped. Her life sentences will be served concurrently, which means they will be served at the same time.

It all started almost five years ago in a remote area situated approximately 60 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama.

Authorities said that deputies from the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence in the 4000 block of County Road 1718 on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders were confronted with a horrifying sight.

According to the Cullman Tribune, Franco was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital and was admitted to the intensive care unit as a result of self-inflicted wounds. Gentry mentioned that Franco received round-the-clock protection from deputies during her time in the hospital, until she was eventually moved to a state mental health facility.

According to the Law&Crime, Franco stayed in the state facility until July 2021. According to reports, she was transferred to the Cullman County Detention Center after a competency hearing.

Along with her lifetime incarceration, Franco has been instructed to make several financial payments. These include $20,000 to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Assessment, approximately $10,584 in restitution, and $10,000 in court costs.
