Alabama Man To Head to Death Penalty if Found Guilty of Killing Grandparents; Brother and Another Man: Prosecutors

An individual in Alabama has been indicted by a grand jury on four counts of capital murder for the tragic deaths of his grandparents, his brother, and a family friend in 2023.

Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy, 22, of Bay Minette, has been indicted by a Mobile County Grand Jury for the reported crimes.

Authorities have reported that Smith-Bracy is responsible for the tragic deaths of his grandmother, Barbara Smith, his brother, Jeremy Smith, and family friend, Sheila Glover. The bodies were discovered on February 23, 2023, in the backyard of his grandparents’ residence in Daphne. According to authorities, he allegedly used a pickaxe to fatally assault his 80-year-old grandfather, Lenard Smith, inside a bedroom of the house.

During his arraignment in February 2023, Smith-Bracy entered a plea of not guilty based on mental defect. According to court records, a mental evaluation was ordered in February of this year.

The motive behind the killings remains undisclosed. Earlier in the day, Smith-Bracy was taken into custody for allegedly damaging a door at the family’s home, leading to a call to the police.

After being released from jail, the individual returned to the residence with the assistance of a friend. Tragically, he then proceeded to use the driver’s firearm to take the lives of three innocent victims. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, immediately contacted 911 upon hearing gunshots and promptly proceeded to a nearby police station.

Following the official indictment, Smith-Bracy will remain in custody without bond as the case progresses. If proven guilty, he could potentially face the death penalty.
