Alabama Death Row Inmate Executed for Brutal Rape and Murder of Girlfriend’s Cousin

An Alabama death row inmate was executed on Thursday after being convicted of the 2010 sexual assault and deadly stabbing of 44-year-old mother Tracy Lynn Wilemon in Chilton County.

Gov. Kay Ivey said James Osgood, 55, was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. Thursday after receiving a lethal injection at a south Alabama prison.

Before the execution, Ivey informed Corrections Commissioner John Hamm that she would not utilise her mercy powers and authorised him to carry out the death sentence.

“The murder of Tracy Wilemon was premeditated, gruesome and disturbing, and tonight, the state carried out the death sentence of James Osgood,” Ivey told reporters.

According to The Associated Press, Osgood was found guilty in 2014 of cutting Wilemon’s neck after sexually assaulting her with his girlfriend, Tonya Vandyke, in 2010.

Wilemon was reportedly Vandyke’s cousin.

“Both Mr. Osgood and his accomplice, who will never see the light of day, from the moment they were inspired by a Hollywood torture scene, set out to commit this heinous crime against Ms. Wilemon and are now paying the price,” Ivey observed.

“And let’s be clear: at the end of it all, Mr. Osgood took Ms. Wilemon’s life, which she and her family will never be able to reclaim. I hope her loved ones can find some closure today.

During a phone conversation from prison, Osgood told the Associated Press he did not appeal his sentence since he was “guilty of murder.”

“I’m a firm believer in, like I said in court, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” he told the judge. “I took a life, and mine was forfeited. I don’t believe in sitting here and wasting everyone’s time and money.

Osgood also apologised to the victim’s family, stating that he would not seek forgiveness.

“I’m not going to ask their forgiveness because I know they can’t give it,” he told me. “I regret stealing her from them. I regret shortening her life. I regret having taken one of God’s children. And I regret the grief and suffering I caused, not only for the victim and her family, but also for myself.”

The victim’s family supported the death penalty during trial, but it is unclear whether any relatives attended Osgood’s execution, which was the 14th this year in the United States.

A day before Osgood was executed, a Texas man convicted of murdering a young mother and setting her body on fire over two decades ago was executed by lethal injection.

Moises Sandoval Mendoza, 41, was pronounced dead at the Huntsville State Penitentiary after being convicted of the March 2004 homicide of his 20-year-old mother, Rachelle O’Neil Tolleson.
