After a multi-vehicle crash on I-20, an 18-wheeler driver faces five manslaughter counts as well as aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon

CAUFMAN COUNTY, TEXAS— A man is charged with five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon after a multi-vehicle incident on I-20 near Kaufman County on Saturday that killed five people, according to officials.

According to KXAS, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported Alexis Gonzalez-Companioni fell asleep while driving an 18-wheeler, which smashed into halted traffic.

The initial impact from Gonzalez-Companioni prompted other automobiles to crash, killing five people.

Gonzalez-Companioni was driving westbound on I-20 when he encountered traffic at the Hiram Road Bridge, according to KXAS.

The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department said that seven vehicles were involved in the incident, including three 18-wheelers and four passenger automobiles.

According to Kaufman County Jail records, Gonzalez-Companioni was detained at 1:22 a.m. Sunday on five manslaughter counts and one aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, with a $1.5 million bond.

The westbound lanes of I-20 were stopped for many hours after the crash while DPS investigated. The injured passengers were transferred to a local hospital for treatment, and their current condition is unknown. According to TxDOT live cams, the westbound and eastbound lanes of I-20 in this vicinity are open.
