West Miami-Dade, Florida – A South Florida lady bonded out of jail one day after being detained at a Miami-Dade Commission meeting for reportedly resisting and punching an officer while attempting to ask commissioners a question.
On Friday afternoon, 7News cameras filmed Camila Ramos, 36, as she and a loved one walked out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre in West Miami-Dade after posting bond.
Ramos declined to comment on her arrest.
Immigration activists came to protest the arrests made amid the commotion that ensued during the commission hearing.
The activists claimed that the tactics taken to remove and arrest Ramos, which precipitated the commotion, were unjust.
“This is an attack on free expression. “This is a travesty,” exclaimed an activist.
They are now asking that officials explain why her arrest became physical and aggressive.
“We demand answers, we demand the sheriff, whose deputies escalated the situation, to give comment,” stated a campaigner.
“We don’t understand political theatre, which was this,” added another activist.
“They didn’t even see her humanity,” explained a third activist.
The chaos began at Thursday’s commission meeting, when Ramos, who was waiting for her turn to speak, asked for clarification when Miami-Dade Commission Chair Anthony Rodriguez explained that future opportunities for anyone to speak about the collaboration between ICE and Miami-Dade County would be denied.
When a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy commanded that she remain silent, Ramos refused, prompting responding deputies to forcibly remove her.
“No, I have the right to understand this process,” Ramos protested as they took her out. “You don’t need to do this; I just need you to listen.”
Onlookers objected loudly, following the deputies as they took Ramos out of the room. She allegedly struck a sign before being thrown to the ground by authorities.
“Let her speak, let her speak,” numerous people chanted in cellphone footage of the incident.
The following conflict resulted in many minor scuffles with law officers on the facility’s second floor, and several other demonstrators were observed being led out of County Hall in handcuffs.
Another person, 25-year-old Z Spicer, was arrested for allegedly interfering with Ramos’ evacuation. They’ve also been released from jail.
According to police reports, an MDSO sergeant was asked to help remove Ramos from the chamber, and she then struck the sergeant in the face with a closed hand during a fight.
Ramos is now facing accusations for violence on an officer and resisting arrest.
Ramos’ attorney, Bruce Lehr, believes the forced removal from the chambers was unjustified.
“Violent protest should be met with force by the authorities, but this woman was not protesting violently,” according to him.
