A Mom in Texas Was Arrested for Reportedly Bringing Vodka-laced Jell-o Shots to Her Child’s Fifth-grade School Party

During a fifth grade holiday party in December, vodka-laced Jell-O shots are said to have made a child sick in East Texas. The mother was arrested.

Teresa Isabel Bernal, 33, is being charged with a felony count of injury to a child after several students at Jones Elementary School in Tyler ate what police say were treats mixed with vodka on December 20.

A police officer in the Tyler Independent School District (ISD) was called by the assistant principal at Jones Elementary to say she thought a parent had brought Jell-O shots to a class Christmas party. This is according to an arrest affidavit that KETK got.

An arrest statement says that after six shots, one child threw up and another couldn’t stand up. Staff at the school said that most of the tainted shots were drunk by students before anyone realised they were mixed with alcohol.

It was said in the affidavit that fifteen kids went to the school nurse because they had stomachaches and headaches.

Another student said he had thrown up twice at school that day after coming back from Christmas break, according to the statement. Another student said he had “passed out” after school after the party.

The woman told the police officer that she bought the Jell-O shots from a nearby shop that she found on Facebook.

“The business is run out of a house, so she went by the house and purchased the Jell-O shots and brought them to the school for the Christmas party,” it said.

Bernal said she didn’t know the Jell-O shots had alcohol in them and that she wasn’t going to give the kids treats that were cooked with alcohol.

But officers didn’t believe Bernal. According to the complaint, they looked at a picture of the Jell-O shots she ordered and saw that “it clearly states the Jell-O shots contain Smirnoff [a vodka brand].”

“In my opinion, there is no way Bernal could have missed the fact that the Jello-O shots she purchased and brought to her daughter’s fifth grade Christmas party contained drinking alcohol,” the arrest document says.

Police talked to some of the teachers and they said they “thought it was strange” that Bernal would bring Jell-O shots to a class party but that they “trusted” Bernal not to bring “anything harmful.”

Tyler ISD officials told Fox News Digital in a statement that they knew Bernal had been arrested and were working with police on the probe.

The district also said Bernal hasn’t been able to come back to school since the incident and will now have to deal with the legal consequences.

Records show that Bernal was put into jail on April 21. Her bail is set at $75,000.00.

She hasn’t been to court yet, and it looks like she doesn’t have a lawyer yet.
