A woman who had just arrived in the United States for an arranged marriage has vanished.
Simran Simran, 24, arrived in the United States from India on Friday, June 20, for a “reported prearranged marriage,” according to a Lindenwold Police Department press release in New Jersey.
Five days later, on Wednesday, June 25, Simran was reported missing. Police stated that they were informed that “the prearranged marriage may have been used for free airfare to the United States.”
Simran, who does not speak English, was seen on surveillance video “apparently looking at her phone and waiting for someone,” and police said she “did not seem in distress” in the footage.
Simran is also said to have an international phone that only “works on wifi.”
“At this time, there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain her possible whereabouts,” police said on Thursday, June 26.
Simran stands 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs approximately 150 pounds, and “has a small scar on the left side of her forehead,” according to police.
She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a white t-shirt, black flip flops, and small diamond-studded earrings, officials said.
Anyone with information about Simran or her whereabouts should contact Detective Joe Tomasetti at 856-784-7566 ext. 421 or [email protected].
PEOPLE has contacted the police department for further comment.
According to the BBC, more than 90% of married people in India have stated that their marriage was arranged.
