A Suspect in an Arizona Bus Stop Hatchet Assault Has Been Charged With Murder After the Victim Died

Two weeks after an unprovoked hatchet attack nearly beheaded a man sitting with his wife at a bus stop in Tucson, Arizona, the suspect has been charged with first-degree murder.

Daniel Michael, 25, was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with serious injury earlier this month in connection with the April 5 incident that left Jacob Couch, 32, on life support.

Couch died of his injuries on Friday, and Michael is now charged with first-degree murder, according to a news release issued Saturday by the Tucson Police Department.

“He’s got the biggest heart that I believe I’ve ever met,” Couch’s younger brother, Luke Couch, told Fox News Digital earlier this month. “And I genuinely mean it. He was simply a caring person. He adored his family. He cared deeply for his family.

Couch and his wife, Kristen, were in California mourning the loss of their stillborn son when they decided to take the bus back to their hometown of Arab, Alabama.

Luke told Fox News Digital that on their trip home, their bus stopped in Tucson.

“Someone told them to get up, but my brother told him to mind his own business. “You know, they weren’t doing anything or causing any trouble,” he remarked. “And then Kristen could tell that the guy was really agitated, and so she told him they were getting up, and they were going to leave.”

“When Couch bent down to gather his belongings, the man came up behind him and swung a hatchet.” And witnesses reported that he hoisted the ax above his head and swung it,” he claimed.

Michael fled after the alleged attack, which happened around 10 a.m. He was caught three days later in his Tucson home.

During the initial bond hearing, his lawyer stated that self-defense could not be ruled out, but Luke Couch denied this, telling Fox News Digital that there was “no evidence” to back it.

“They said he was going to try to grip everything, including straws. I mean, my brother was attacked from behind when he was bending over. That is not self-defense,” Luke stressed.

“I want to make sure this man never does this again and no other family has to go through what my family has gone through,” he added. “Seeing my brother laying in a hospital bed, unable to move or do anything, it hurts so much to know that I couldn’t be there to defend him because he would have done it for me in a heartbeat. We, as a family, demand fast justice.”

Couch was the father to a 15-year-old girl.
