Columbus, OH — A 44-year-old substitute teacher in Ohio has been arrested and charged after allegedly attempting to hire a high school student to kill her husband amid their ongoing divorce.
Stephanie Demetrius was taken into custody last week and charged with one count of felony conspiracy to commit a crime, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime. Jail records also list her last name as “Demetrious.”
Authorities say Demetrius approached a student at the Academy for Urban Scholars High School on March 26 and offered him $2,000 to murder her husband. The student’s identity and age have not been disclosed.
Demetrius allegedly gave the student a $250 cash down payment and later discussed the plan further. In a conversation reportedly recorded by authorities, she reassured the student she would pay the remaining $1,750 and referenced a $1,500 balance still owed, according to WSYX.
Investigators say she also provided detailed information about her husband’s and children’s schedules, advising the student when the house would be empty. She allegedly suggested that the husband’s home office would be a good location for a shooting, telling the student that neighbors “don’t care” about hearing gunfire.
Records show Demetrius and her husband first filed for divorce in 2017 but later withdrew the petition. She filed again in April 2024.
When contacted by The Columbus Dispatch, Demetrius’ husband declined to comment on the allegations, stating he wanted to focus on their children.
Demetrius appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Thursday. Judge Jessica D’Varga set her bond at $150,000 and issued a no-contact order preventing her from communicating with her husband. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 11.
